Cultivating Success

 

Cultivating Success™ is an innovative education program combining classroom and on-farm learning experiences with the goal of increasing the number and fostering the success of sustainable small farmers and ranchers. Courses include discussions led by experts in agriculture and business, by experienced farmers who want to share their knowledge, as well as tours of successful farm operations.

 

Cultivating Success Programs offered in Whatcom County:

Farmer Market

Agricultural Entrepreneurship and Business Planning

In this 8-class series, participants will learn how to take care of a business covering topics of developing an innovative marketing concept and strategy, evaluating financial plans, and legal and tax implications of decisions that may be made. Students will leave the class with a business plan they have developed.

Guest speakers include local business and financial experts, legal experts, and small business counselors, as well as successful local farmers. These contacts help new and established farmers accurately assess what it takes to launch a new agricultural business and maintain its financial health, as well as establish a support network.

Winter 2013 - Agricultural Entrepreneurship & Business Planning

Farming


Sustainable Small Acreage Farming and Ranching

This 11 week class offers an overview of potential small acreage farming and ranching enterprises and production systems. Topics covered include sustainable farming practices, whole farm planning, direct marketing, integrated pest management, soil management, and much more!

The course includes classroom lectures, guest speakers from farmers and industry experts as well as farm tours. Participants make connections with successful sustainable farmers and community resource people.
